Failed the California exam? The California Insurance Code is usually why.
The California exams read like national exams with California law folded into every area. Candidates who studied a generic course often know the policy types and lose the points that hinge on a code section number: 30 days for seniors, 3 working days, 24 hours of CE, $50,000 for transacting without a license.
Before you reschedule
- Reschedule through PSI, online or by phone, the same way you booked the first attempt.
- Your score report shows how you did by area; bring it to your study plan.
- You can switch between the combined exam and the two line exams if one format suits you better.
- Spanish is available for every attempt; choose it when you book.
Where California candidates lose points
Three areas cost the most. Contract law asks for specific Insurance Code sections on concealment, representations and warranties (331, 333, 334, 354, 355, 359). The marketplace section tests licensing, appointment, fiduciary duty, CE and senior protections. And senior health products alone are 15 of the 75 Accident & Health questions, mixing Medicare with California rules such as the six-month open enrollment, the birthday rule and HICAP.
The second-attempt plan
- Take a full diagnostic mock first to find which of the 12 areas are below 60%, and aim for 75% in practice.
- Spend most of your time on your three weakest areas; points come from weaknesses.
- Memorize the California numbers: 30-day senior free look, 10-30 days under 60, 3 working days to notify on replacement, 24 CE hours with 3 in ethics, 8 plus 4 hours of annuity training.
- In the last week, take full timed simulations until you clear 75% twice.
